Although originally written as a concert work, this piece was selected as the 4th Section Test Piece for the Butlins Mineworkers' Contest in 2006 to some acclaim.
The piece is in three movements and is associated with parts of Bolsover Castle in Derbyshire which was owned by William Cavendish in the 1600s.
The first section is the Great Hall which features the grandeur of the castle façade followed by "conversations" and "laughter" between various instruments in the band depicting the social aspect of the castle. In the second movement we have the beautiful Walk in the Gardens featuring the Venus Fountain and the final movement is The Riding School in which we can hear the horses cantering around during training.
A good test for lower section bands but also a descriptive concert piece which would go well as the centrepiece of any concert programme for bands of all sections.
